Ana Choudhury
Ana Choudhury came to England in the early 1960’s from Bangladesh. His first restaurant, called ‘Mother India’ on Lillie Road, Earls Court, was opened in 1967. During those early days Indian cuisine was generally found in major cities only. Ana felt there was a niche in the market for Indian cuisine in prosperous Outer London areas and using his entrepreneurial flare in 1978 he started with the now world famous ‘Prince of India Restaurant – Gerrards Cross’.
Within a few years the largest chain of Indian restaurants in Europe was formed consisting of 17 restaurants. Ana Choudhury had transformed the Indian Restaurant Industry and played a pivotal role in making Indian cuisine the British National favourite cuisine. Raymond Blanc’s - Le Patron 1988 Guide to Restaurants mentions Ana Choudhury as ‘…although not a chef…he has a deep knowledge of Indian cuisine and realised the potential that first class quality and presentation, to which he would apply his own high standards, would be the basis for continuing success . . .'
A success story it certainly has been!

The History of the House of Spice™
The House of Spice™ Group of Restaurants was founded by Councillor Ana Choudhury, a renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist.
Ana Choudhury founded the Prince of India Group of Restaurants in the late 1970’s which consisted of 17 restaurants across Central London and the South-East of England, which was the largest chain of Indian restaurants in Europe, if not the world. Regular guests included many celebrities like the Bee Gee’s, Dennis Waterman, Madonna, Roger Moore, Des O’Conner to name just a few.
After deciding to retire early, Ana Choudhury dispensed of the Prince of India Group in the early 1990’s, but the tireless workaholic did not enjoy retirement and thus could not remain retired for long.
The House of Spice™ concept began immediately and now the group boasts a total of nine award winning restaurants with plans for further expansion across Europe.
